🍺 New publication alert! A new article by Prof Dr Sven Van Kerckhoven and Prof Dr Dr. Max Nagel from the BSoG has been published in Contemporary Social Science: “Trappist beers: monastic history and contemporary market dynamics.” The article explores how Trappist breweries have successfully navigated the tension between centuries-old monastic traditions and the realities of today’s competitive beer market. The authors examine how Trappist breweries have maintained their authenticity while facing challenges such as demographic pressures within monastic communities, rising operational costs, and increasing competition from secular breweries producing similar beers. They highlight the role of the International Trappist Association (ITA) recognition system in protecting the authenticity of Trappist products and supporting the sustainability of this unique brewing model. The article shows how these historic brewing traditions continue to shape local communities and inspire the craft beer industry, demonstrating the lasting value of authenticity and heritage in contemporary markets.
