New paper! Etiology of Chickpea Yellowing Syndrome (CYS) in Argentina: the role of fungal and viral pathogens The foundational etiology research from my PhD thesis at CONICET/INTA has just been published in the European Journal of Plant Pathology. We conducted a three-year survey across Argentina’s main production regions to identify the primary biotic agents behind CYS, a complex of symptoms that has been limiting chickpea productivity. Key takeaways from the study: 🍄 Fungal Dominance: Fusarium was the dominant fungal genus (74%), with the Fusarium oxysporum species complex being the most prevalent. 🦠 Viral Discovery: This work provides the first report of bean leafroll virus (BLRV) and alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) infecting chickpeas in Argentina. 🔄 Complex Interactions: We established that CYS is not caused by a single agent. Rather, it is driven by a complex, multi-pathogen etiology. Understanding this disease etiology provides the essential knowledge required to design effective, integrated disease management strategies our farmers need.
