How close are humanoid robots to practical use in factories? We wanted to find out. New technologies often arrive with a lot of hype. As a competence centre for engineering and industrial innovation, we prefer to test things ourselves to get real data. That is why we started a research project with "Sonny," a Unitree G1 humanoid robot. Together with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, our team looked closely at how these robots are programmed and trained. Unlike classic industrial robots, humanoids require entirely new software frameworks and training methods, such as reinforcement learning. Now that the project is complete, Sonny is moving permanently to the university in Wels to support academic education. By investing in research and collaboration, BRP-Rotax continues to build knowledge, strengthen its expertise and explore emerging technologies. Because innovation doesn’t come from waiting. It comes from doing. Thank you to the Fachhochschule Oberösterreich and Thomas Schichl for this cooperation! How do you see the timeline for humanoid robots in manufacturing? Let's share experiences in the comments.
