British Red Cross’ Community Navigator Service is supporting people in crisis: David*, a 65‑year‑old man, had been living with and caring for his brother. Sadly, after his brother passed away, David became homeless. As the tenancy was in his brother’s name, David had no legal right to remain in the property.   David ended up living in a tent, with only 40p to his name and had not eaten for several days. David was also managing a range of physical health conditions, including vision and mobility issues, as well as mental health concerns. By the time our Community Navigators met him, he was extremely vulnerable, isolated, and at imminent risk of further deterioration. British Red Cross’ Community Navigators provided rapid, holistic, cross‑sector support, addressing both immediate needs and longer‑term stability which included: 🟢 Securing emergency accommodation 🟢 Arranging food parcels 🟢 Sourcing and delivering clothing and a SIM card 🟢 Supporting him to complete social housing paperwork, including hands‑on help due to his limited vision 🟢 Ensuring he accessed benefits he had not realised he was eligible for 🟢 Connecting him with services to support his health conditions 🟢 Assisting him in applying for a bus pass, reducing mobility barriers   British Red Cross' intervention not only made a significant difference to David, but also delivered system‑wide benefits by: 🟢 Preventing escalation into more costly crisis services. 🟢 Reducing the risk of hospital admission and safeguarding NHS capacity. 🟢 Minimising the likelihood of long‑term homelessness. 🟢 Providing compassionate, cost‑effective, upstream support.   Early person‑centred support doesn’t just change lives - it protects systems, prevents crises, and creates better long‑term outcomes for both individuals and public services. *Please note, to uphold privacy, the name used is not the individual’s real name.
