Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS and Galileo are central to modern infrastructure but must pass through the ionosphere; a highly dynamic, charged atmospheric layer. Volatile space weather events drive variations in Total Electron Content (TEC), scintillation, and Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) that delay and disrupt these critical signals. This project will develop advanced models to predict, nowcast, and mitigate these errors to protect high-precision Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) services. 🔬 Technical Scope & Methods The research will address how high-precision protocols like Precise Point Positioning (PPP) degrade during severe geomagnetic storms. Potential avenues include: Precision Corrections: Designing advanced regional or global ionospheric corrections that maintain high fidelity during intense solar storms. Uncertainty Quantification: Building statistical models that dynamically quantify uncertainty to warn safety-critical users (e.g., aviation, autonomous transport) of system degradation. Data-Driven Frameworks: Ingesting large-scale satellite datasets using data assimilation, statistical learning, and signal processing. 📋 Candidate Profile This position is highly suited for a quantitative student holding a degree in Physics, Geophysics, Mathematics, Data Science, or Engineering. You will receive rigorous training in scientific computing, ionospheric physics, and big data analytics.
