‘Farmers deserve respect’: NFU demands better facilities and communication at sugar mills By ChiniMandi - June 11, 2026 Sugarcane farmers have endured poor treatment for too long, and the situation can no longer be allowed to continue, National Farmers Union (NFU) General Secretary Mahendra Chaudhary told a gathering of cane growers in Ba yesterday. Addressing the meeting, Chaudhary expressed serious concern over the conditions faced by farmers at sugar mills, claiming that many are treated without the dignity and respect they deserve. He referred to disruptions during the last crushing season, including the fire-related breakdown at the Rarawai Sugar Mill and operational problems at the Lautoka Sugar Mill, which resulted in lengthy delays for farmers delivering cane. According to Chaudhary, some farmers were forced to remain at milling stations for as long as two days during these disruptions, often without adequate support, meals or suitable places to rest. He questioned how farmers were expected to manage extended waiting periods with limited food and basic resources, highlighting the lack of essential facilities available during mill breakdowns. Chaudhary also criticised what he described as poor communication between mill management, farmers and lorry drivers when operational issues arise. He said many are left waiting for hours without clear information about the cause of breakdowns or the expected time required for repairs. In addition, he alleged that some officials of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) display a dismissive attitude towards farmers, a situation he said was unacceptable. “This is not going to be acceptable. Farmers must be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve,” Chaudhary said. To address these concerns, the NFU has prepared a proposal for submission to the government seeking improved welfare measures for both sugarcane farmers and lorry drivers. Among its recommendations are the construction of proper washroom and rest facilities at all FSC mills to ensure farmers have access to essential services during breakdowns and extended delays. The proposal also calls for meal allowances to be provided when mill breakdowns last longer than five hours. In addition, the NFU is seeking the appointment of dedicated communication officers at all mills to provide regular and transparent updates to farmers and drivers regarding operational problems and repair schedules. The union believes these measures would improve working conditions for farmers and ensure they receive better support during disruptions at sugar mills.
