“Baby, it’s cold inside.” That’s how RNZ summed up BRANZ’s latest study into home temperatures - and the data backs it up. ❄️ Nearly half of Kiwis say their homes aren’t warm enough ❄️ 1 in 5 can see their breath indoors in winter ❄️ Bedrooms average just 16.5°C overnight - well below WHO recommendations (20°C for kids, 18°C adults) ❄️ 41% of bedrooms are never heated at all This data comes from BRANZ’s Household Energy End-use Project (HEEP2), the largest study of home temperatures in 20 years. There is progress though: ✅ Living room temperatures now average 20.4°C — above WHO recommendations ✅ Indoor temps have increased by around 3°C over 20 years ✅ Heat pump uptake has risen from 1% to over 60% But the reality is clear: 👉 We’re heating the rooms we live in - not the rooms we sleep in - which has long term health risks.
