As Cyclone Vaianu approaches New Zealand, here are simple, practical steps you can take now to help reduce potential damage to your home, from BRANZ resilience expert Kathryn (Katy) Stokes. 1️ - Clear gutters, grates and drains Remove leaves and debris from gutters and downpipes. Check nearby street drains and culverts - blockages increase the risk of surface flooding and water entering buildings. 2️ - Secure outdoor items - Tie down or move bins, outdoor furniture, trampolines and pots. In high winds, unsecured items can damage homes or block drainage paths. 3️ - Check doors and windows - Close and latch windows, secure loose seals, and cover cracked glass if possible. If you know where water usually gets in, prepare towels or containers. 4️ - Lift valuables off the floor - In flood‑prone areas, move electronics, documents and valuables to higher levels. If space allows, roll up rugs and lift soft furnishings. 5️ - Reduce hazards around your home - Trim small branches and move loose items away from windows, doors and downpipes. Keep cleared material away from drains and low‑lying areas. Stay informed through the Civil Defence, local council updates, and weather warnings - and if you can, check on neighbours who may need help preparing.
