When a Solution Isn’t the Solution (And When It Is) In times of trouble or difficulty, most of the time, advice isn’t necessary. It can be interpreted as condescension, “mansplaining”, or insult of intelligence. It also invokes a dynamic of hierarchy rather than equality or collaboration. What is actually needed: validation & empathy, mitleiden & dasein. The hell of suffering is found in the isolation of it. Not being alone, not carrying it alone, already lightens the burden. Most people can find their own solution once they know they are not alone in facing the problem. When solutions and advice ARE helpful: In times of crisis, when one is ungrounded and disoriented (think of a tornado). When a foundation is needed for structure, security, safety and direction. Presenting validation, empathy, and active listening AS the solution can be helpful in giving direction and orientation to those “fix it”-minded people who just want to know how best to help and support. #problem #problemsolving #mansplaining #crisis #fyp
