At the 21st annual Borealis Innovation Awards in Vienna, hosted by TGM, a Higher Technical College, three diploma theses from HTL students were recognized for driving sustainability, energy efficiency, and eco-friendly solutions in the plastics industry. 🥇 First place went to Denise Lehner and Nikola Jelinek, who developed a method to detect naturally occurring fungal species capable of biodegrading plastics, using them as a food source. 🥈 Anna Decker and Lina-Marie Salzmann earned second for showing that plastic drying processes are optimized by using vacuum technologies, achieving energy savings of over 80% compared to standard methods. 🥉 Third place was awarded to Malik Grovogui and Dominik Henhapel for developing two plastics made from renewable resources, allowing for the production of reusable cups that are both food-safe and bio-based.
