This week, we were in China as part of a Dutch government-led trade mission focused on sustainable airport development. Across Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Shanghai, we met with airport authorities, project stakeholders and industry partners to explore how airports are evolving in response to growing passenger volumes, changing operational demands and increasingly ambitious sustainability goals. One theme consistently stood out: airports perform best when operational efficiency, passenger experience and sustainability are considered together rather than in isolation. The scale of airport development taking place across the region highlighted the importance of planning for the future. Major expansion projects, integrated transport hubs and smart infrastructure initiatives demonstrated how airports are evolving to meet growing demand while supporting long-term sustainability goals. Access is an important part of that equation. The way people arrive, enter and move through a building helps shape both the experience of its users and the long-term performance of the space itself. Thoughtful entrance design can also contribute to wider sustainability goals, from energy efficiency to operational resilience. The value of visits like this is not only in sharing expertise, but also in listening and learning. Bringing together airport operators, designers, technology providers and policymakers creates opportunities to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships and develop better solutions for the future. We were proud to be part of a delegation showcasing Dutch expertise and innovation, and we look forward to continuing the conversations and collaborations that began throughout the week. #SustainableAviation #AirportDevelopment #ChinaNetherlands #Guangzhou #AviationInnovation #Shenzhen #SustainableAirportDevelopment | Daan van Beusekom | Douwe Jolles
