Marilyn Monroe's gold brocade opera coat is coming to auction at Bonhams. Dating to 1962 and crafted from gold brocade with inlaid flowers and an oversized collar, the coat bears a label with Monroe's initials "M.M.", stitched in red thread. It was purchased by Monroe just two months before her death and lent to her publicist Patricia Newcomb, who wore it when accompanying her to John F. Kennedy's birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden on 19 May 1962. Following Monroe's passing, the coat was bequeathed to her acting coach Lee Strasberg and has not appeared on the market since 1999. Marissa Speer, Bonhams Head of Sale for Handbags and Fashion, comments: "The opera coat is a perfect example of her enduring style, with a wonderful monogrammed label adding a personal touch. We are delighted to present it at auction, allowing collectors and fans the opportunity to discover such a personal piece from her wardrobe."
