A r t i c l e How can structural design help reduce embodied greenhouse gas emissions? In a recent technical article for nbau. Nachhaltig Bauen, published by Ernst & Sohn on 16 June 2026, our colleague Christian Wrede from B+G Düsseldorf, and Benedikt Kosmann from ELE Beratende Ingenieure GmbH Erdbaulaboratorium Essen, addressed this question in detail. Titled ‘Reduktion grauer Treibhausgasemissionen von Beton, Betonstahl und Baustahl’ (‘Reducing embodied greenhouse gas emissions from concrete, reinforcing steel and structural steel’), the article focuses on tendering- and execution-relevant specifications in structural design. It presents proposed tender texts that can significantly reduce embodied greenhouse gas emissions associated with concrete, reinforcing steel, and structural steel by setting maximum permissible global warming potential values per material unit and including binding documentation requirements. The article is available in German to subscribers of nbau – Nachhaltig Bauen. https://lnkd.in/eB-9Be_A
