This tiny box may make a future global quantum internet possible — connecting quantum sensors and computers across massive distances and improving things like navigation and communication security. But first, it will head to space in 2027 for a year-long experiment. Space doesn't allow for the large, delicate, energy-intensive equipment typically used in Earth-bound lab settings for quantum experiments. So, to push this tech toward more efficient uses, we're going to test its limits by putting it through the stresses of launch and spaceflight. We'll learn from its on-orbit performance, getting us that much closer to practical quantum networks.
