I taught myself to do reference checks. Here's why: I've made over 100,000 introductions, and one of the first things the other person asks me is, "do you know anyone who's worked with them?" It's the question that decides whether they take the meeting at all. So now, before I introduce you, I can go find out. I'll talk to people who know your work first hand, which allows me to make better intros for you. I tried it on Andrew D'Souza first. The verdict was kinder than he deserves. And here's the part I'm enjoying a little too much: I know 160,000+ people. So whoever you are, I probably already know someone who's worked with you. Which raises a genuinely fun question: do you know what your references would say about you? If there's someone who can speak about your work, energy, or character (a former boss, a mentor, colleague), introduce us and I'll take it from there.
