Bold Contemporary Artist | Redefining Boundaries Through Provocative Art

Francisco Simões, sculptor, painter, engraver, was born in 1946 in Porto Brandão, Almada. In 1967, he received a scholarship from O.C.D.E. in Rome, Turin, Novara, Verona and Milan and the following year he worked at the Louvre Museum at the invitation of Germain Bazin. In 1969 he moved to Funchal where he began his teaching career and the sculpture course at the Academy of Music and Fine Arts of Madeira which ended in 1974. In 1987 he was awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Education in order to dedicate himself exclusively to sculpture and painting projects. In 1991 he established his residence and studio in Sintra and in 1996 the Laranjeiro Secondary School. it was renamed Escola Secundária Francisco Simões. In 1996 he was awarded the Medal of Cultural Merit by the Oeiras City Council. In 1997 he was appointed advisor to the Secretary of State for Educational Administration and in 1998 advisor to the Minister of Education. In 1999 he was awarded the “Medal of Cultural Merit” by the Municipality of Sintra. He has exhibited collectively since 1969 and individually since 1981, painting, drawing and sculpture, sometimes under the name of Francisco de Almada. collective operations in Portugal, Spain, France and Argentina.
