Principal Steven Coote has reflected on the 'radical work of raising humans'. 'One of the most common questions being asked right now in education is: "What does it mean to be human in the age of artificial intelligence?" It is an important question. But I sometimes wonder whether it leads us towards the wrong comparison. Too often, discussions about the future of education become an exercise in identifying what humans can do that machines cannot, as though the purpose of schooling is to preserve a shrinking territory of uniquely human capability. History suggests otherwise. The purpose of education has never fundamentally been about producing capabilities that are unavailable elsewhere. If that were true, the invention of the calculator would have diminished the importance of mathematics, and the arrival of the internet would have rendered schools largely unnecessary. Instead, each technological shift has reminded us of something important: Education is not principally concerned with information. Education is concerned with formation. The more significant question is not whether AI can outperform humans in particular tasks. It is what kind of people we hope our young people will become.' Steven has explored this idea further in a recent reflection on the role of schools, families and communities in raising the next generation.
