Tariff Strategy: Between Contractual Inertia and Strategic Urgency Two recent articles (links below) offer divergent takes on tariff exposure and supply chain response. One frames the issue retrospectively: existing contracts are often rigid, negotiated under different assumptions, and difficult to unwind. It rightly cautions that many manufacturers are constrained by what is already signed and that retrofitting agility into legacy agreements is neither fast nor frictionless. The other urges immediate action: diversify sourcing, reconfigure supply chains, and mitigate exposure now. It emphasizes that waiting is not a strategy, and that inaction compounds risk. Both are partially correct. But neither fully captures the nuance. For global middle-market manufacturers, the real work lies in two parallel tracks: First, understanding what can be done today within the bounds of current obligations. That includes scenario planning, identifying renegotiation triggers, and building operational buffers. Second, designing what should be done tomorrow - not in reaction to headlines, but in alignment with where markets, customers, and geopolitical dynamics are headed. Sometimes the right move is to wait. But waiting must be tactical, not passive. It must be embedded in a strategy that is owned by the C-suite and understood across the organization.
