On this day in 1942, the Battle of Midway began. Three days later it had become the turning point of the Pacific War. The battle was effectively decided in about five minutes, when American dive bombers caught Japan’s carriers mid refuel with aircraft and fuel exposed on deck. It was won by intelligence, not firepower. US codebreakers tricked the Japanese into revealing their target was Midway by sending a fake message about a broken water plant. Japan had the larger, more experienced fleet. The US won anyway, sinking four carriers to one.
