221 years ago today, a small force of US Marines and mercenaries marched 500 miles across the Libyan desert and stormed the port city of Derna. It was the first time American forces fought on foreign soil. They won. The line they earned that day still echoes in the Marines' Hymn: "to the shores of Tripoli." Some things about the Marine Corps have not changed in 221 years.
