I still remember the first time I watched The Illusion of Life documentary as a student. I paused, rewound, paused again. Those 12 principles weren't just rules ā they were a love letter to movement itself. Fast-forward to today: real-time engines, AI-assisted keyframing, motion capture at our fingertips. Yet here we are, still talking about squash and stretch, anticipation, follow-through. Why? Because technology changes. Human perception doesn't. At our studio, we just wrapped a real-time cinematic in Unreal Engine 5. The tools were breathtaking. But the magic? That came from an animator who spent three days refining the spacing on a single hand gesture. Straight Ahead Action & Pose to Pose 5. Follow Through & Overlapping Action 6. Slow In & Slow Out 7. Arcs 8. Secondary Action 9. Timing 10. Exaggeration 11. Solid Drawing 12. Appeal These aren't nostalgia. They're the visual grammar of storytelling. AI can interpolate. It can't feel ā not yet. And that's exactly why the best animators, riggers, and VFX artists still study them like scripture. Whether you're in 3D animation, game cinematics, or AI-assisted motion design, these fundamentals are your competitive edge. Which principle do you rely on most in your daily work ā and has AI changed how you apply it? Drop your answer below.
