Yesterday, the faculty opened the XR Design Lab: expanding the designer’s toolbox with extended reality. The XR Design Lab brings design-oriented research and education together through immersive and responsive technologies such as VR, AR and MR. It serves as a hub for exploring, testing and advancing spatial design across (landscape) architecture, urbanism, building technology and the management of the built environment. At its heart sits an advanced VR Cave, one of the most sophisticated facilities of its kind in Europe, alongside an interactive GeoTable that connects physical models with digital environments in real time. Guest speakers Josef Musil (Foster + Partners) and prof. Bradley Cantrell (University of Virginia) showed the possibilities of these technologies in both practical application and academic research. Dean Machiel Van Dorst then officially opened the XR Design Lab, followed by live demonstrations of the VR Cave and the GeoTable. Curious about the applications of extended reality? Get in touch with the XR Design Lab scientific director Prof. Dr. Steffen Nijhuis.
