What if we turned urban analysis into an open, interactive learning experience? Leo van den Burg, teacher of Urban Design, and Assistant Professor Claudiu Forgaci are developing the Open Urban Analysis Guidebook: Morphology: an open, interactive platform that reimagines a long-standing textbook on urban analysis. Urban analysis is a fundamental skill in architectural education. It helps students understand spatial structures, interpret context and ground their design decisions in research. But the tools available to study cities have changed significantly since the original guidebook was published in 2004. New technologies, from AI to AR and VR, and the growing availability of spatial data offer new possibilities. At the same time, students need support in making sense of that data and translating it into meaningful maps, knowledge and design decisions. The new platform is designed as an evolving learning environment. Students can move between techniques and case studies, explore examples and see how analytical methods can support the design process. “It was never the idea that there would be a final version of this book,” says Van den Burg. “Simply an ongoing process of additions.” By making the guidebook open and interactive, the project supports learning at TU Delft and offers an accessible resource for a wider international audience. #urbananalysis #urbandesign #architecturaleducation
