How do you design a neighbourhood that truly works for young people? In Delft’s Voorhof district, Urbanism student Joost Bastiaansen is exploring that question. He wanted to design something specifically for young people and got in touch with youth centre The Mall through WIJStad. Every week, he visits this youth centre to listen, observe, and engage. What he’s discovering is powerful: for many young people, public space is their “backyard.” Places like gallery corridors, green areas, and shopping centres play a vital role in how they meet, connect, and feel at home. Joost is investigating how urban design can contribute to more inclusive and livable neighbourhoods. “I’m interested in how the way a neighbourhood is built affects people’s behaviour.
