With global warming wet days get wetter, but the wettest days get wetter than ordinary wet days, and the wettest, wettest days get even wetter than the almost as wet days. Why? Weather fronts are to blame, according to a new study by Kjersti Konstali, Thomas Spengler, Clemens Spensberger and Asgeir Sorteberg, all from the Bjerknes Centre and University of Bergen. In the mid-latitudes fronts seem to be the only phenomena available to wring all the extra available moisture out of the air, making it tempting to rephrase the question: Why do other weather types not bring more rain?
