How are non-bank financial institutions reshaping global banking? NBFIs are key counterparties of cross-border bank credit, with their borrowing growing significantly in 2025. Here are the key highlights from our recent #BISStatistics release: Cross-border bank credit to NBFIs increased by $312 billion in Q3 2025, marking a 13% year-on-year growth. This makes NBFIs the fastest-growing counterparty sector globally. Lending to NBFI borrowers in the United States drove the expansion in cross-border bank credit globally, accounting for $157 billion of the increase. This represented over half of the total increase in cross-border credit to US borrowers and 22% of the total growth in cross-border bank credit. What’s next for NBFIs in global banking?
