Ask a room of care leaders why they still do everything themselves, and most will share a time they handed something over and it went wrong. That came up at Session 2 of The Leadership Lunch Club, with leadership coach Alexis Neighbour PCC. The distrust in the room was real, and earned. But when Alexis dug into those stories, a pattern showed up: many had handed off the whole task in one go, with no stages in between, no way to build trust before the stakes got high. Not delegating carries a cost too however. Teams that stay dependent, confidence that never gets to build, leaders whose own capacity stops growing. Her fix was to stop treating delegation as all-or-nothing. She walked the group through a way to hand tasks over in stages, building trust as they went, rather than expecting inexperienced team members to jump from zero responsibility to full ownership overnight. By the end, this cohort of owners and managers had each named something they're handing over this fortnight: visit confirmations, rota management, invoicing, social media. Small handovers, done properly. Conversations like this are exactly why we built The Leadership Lunch Club. Our two penultimate sessions - Having the Difficult Conversations and Understanding Your Leadership Style - are coming up over the next few weeks.
