Restoring the strength of an industrial past through refined contemporary materiality. +++ ALBERT RESIDENCE Berchem, Antwerp +++ The materiality of the former ATEA factory is rooted in the preservation of its industrial character, with the historic façade acting as a defining structural and visual element of the design. Existing brick structures and robust materials are kept visible and carefully restored, ensuring the legibility of the original building remains intact. New interventions are deliberately restrained in their material expression and carefully attuned to the existing fabric. This creates a clear dialogue between old and new, where contemporary additions integrate into the existing heritage without overpowering it. The result is a respectful balance between preservation, restoration, and contemporary insertion. +++ De materialisatie van de voormalige ATEA-fabriek vertrekt vanuit het behoud van het industriële karakter en de historische gevel als dragend element van het ontwerp. Bestaande baksteenstructuren en robuuste materialen blijven zichtbaar en worden zorgvuldig gerestaureerd, waardoor de leesbaarheid van het oorspronkelijke gebouw behouden blijft. Nieuwe toevoegingen zijn in hun materiaalkeuze ingetogen en afgestemd op het bestaande geheel. Zo ontstaat een duidelijke dialoog tussen oud en nieuw, waarbij de nieuwe ingrepen zich voegen naar het bestaande patrimonium zonder het te overschaduwen.
