A History Lives in Our Walls Misinformation. George Orwell saw it clearly. He devoted his life to finding truth. History repeats itself. Last week we had the joy of welcoming Richard Blair, son of George Orwell, and Quentin Kopp, son of Georges Kopp, Orwell's Commanding Officer in the Spanish Civil War. Fifteen members of the Orwell Society joined them. Staff, students and families gathered together for what became a special afternoon. Many people don't know that our Orwell Building carries its own piece of this history. During the Spanish Civil War it was the Sanatori Maurin, where Orwell came to recover after being shot in the neck on the Aragon Front in 1937. We welcome Richard every two years and it is something we never take for granted. That history lives in our walls. Richard spoke about his father as a kind and gentle parent, deeply devoted to his child. A fastidious writer, yes, but also a man who loved. Those stories help us understand the heart behind the work. Both Richard and Quentin recommended reading Politics and the English Language, one of Orwell's most beloved essays. It is as relevant today as ever and available for free on the Orwell Foundation website. Our relationship with Richard Blair and the Orwell Society is a gift. To history, to truth, and to the privilege of asking hard questions together. Searching for truth and asking the questions you can't Google. Always.
