How might global resource firms respond when geopolitics, energy transition, and ESG pressures collide? A new fictional teaching case by Prof. Dr. Dorothee Maria Winkler, recently published with The Case Centre, explores one illustrative scenario faced by companies in the sector. Using the example of Glencore, the world’s largest commodity trader and a major cobalt producer, the case invites students and managers to analyze how a global resource firm might respond to several strategic pressures: 🔻 Falling cobalt prices driven by China’s production surge 🔋 The rise of cobalt-free battery technologies 🌍 Increasing scrutiny of ESG performance Set in 2024 under CEO Gary Nagle, the case provides an opportunity to discuss nonmarket strategy, including corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate political activity (CPA), and how firms navigate complex political, regulatory, and societal environments. Co-authored with David Sieber-Mengel, the case is designed for courses in strategy, sustainability, and international business. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/e22UC26u Note: This fictional teaching case is based on publicly available sources and is intended solely for classroom discussion.
