For five years, much of Europe's auto industry planned for one single future: A fast switch to electric mobility, and an equally fast phase-out of the combustion engine. OEMs, suppliers, and regulators steered investment across the value chain accordingly. But the market did not follow that script and the consequences are severe: • Factory utilization in high-cost markets has dropped well below the 70–75% breakeven threshold, and • European vehicle output has buckled, dropping from a pre-2020 high of 17 million units to just 14 million today. The course correction is now overdue. The industry is off course, and the Chief Operating Officer (COO) is key to leading the way back. We have identified six structural challenges that should be at the top of every automotive COO's agenda. See the slider below for our team's perspective on the key issues European automotive players must address to regain competitiveness.
