🤩 The next evolution of medicines research in Ireland starts here. 🤩 Today’s announcement of Rinn Pharma & BioPharma - Research & Innovation in Making Medicines, marks a major new chapter for Ireland’s pharma and biopharma #research ecosystem. As part of the new national Rinn Research Ireland Centres network, Rinn Pharma & BioPharma will receive €60.3 million in Research Ireland investment and will be coordinated by the University of Limerick, hosted through the Bernal Institute, University of Limerick. Building on the outstanding legacy of SSPC, Research Ireland Centre for Pharmaceuticals, this new centre will focus on two critical #challenges for the future of #medicines: ✅ developing more patient-centred medicines for diverse patient needs ✅ embedding sustainability across drug development, manufacturing, formulation, synthesis and bioprocessing This is not just a continuation of SSPC. It is the next evolution. Rinn Pharma & BioPharma will bring together 73 co-applicants and PIs, support 171 PhDs, and connect a powerful national partnership across UL, UCD, TCD, UCC, NIBRT, RCSI, DCU, Maynooth University, SETU, University of Galway, MTU and Tyndall. At Bernal, this builds on more than 25 years of biopharma research excellence combining expertise in materials, molecules, medicines, manufacturing, modelling, analytical science and industry-focused innovation. As Professor Sarah Hudson, Director of the Bernal Institute, said: “We are delighted with this continued investment in research and innovation in making medicines through Rinn Pharma & BioPharma, to be hosted here in the Bernal Institute. Biopharma has been a core research pillar in Bernal for over 25 years. This investment enables us to unite experts from diverse fields, drive cross-disciplinary collaboration, and develop innovative technologies and materials to solve challenges across the pharma and biopharma sector.” For Ireland, this is a clear signal of ambition. For UL and Bernal, it is recognition of a long-standing research strength. For industry, it creates a national platform to address real challenges in how medicines are designed, manufactured, scaled and made more sustainable. From SSPC to Rinn Pharma & BioPharma this is legacy, leadership and the future of making medicines. Congratulations to Professor Damien Thompson, the wider Rinn Pharma & BioPharma team, Research Ireland, University of Limerick, the Bernal Institute, SSPC and all national partners involved.
