California left enough clean energy on the table this spring to power millions of homes. Why? Renewables curtailment—when grid operators shut off solar and wind because the grid can’t absorb the surplus—hit an all-time record in April: 1.46 million MWh, equal to 18% of all grid-scale wind and solar generation in California. In the latest Energy Institute at Haas blog post, Haas Professor Lucas Davis breaks down why spring is the peak season for curtailment and what is revealed by different approaches for visualizing the same 143 data points. The good news? California’s battery storage is now sufficient to avoid most curtailments during low-solar generation months. 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gKEZbVnD
