Every windscreen chip will eventually crack. It’s a message we often use in our advertising — and it’s backed by science. Our research, including work with the Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant / University of Wales Trinity Saint David, has helped us better understand how glass damage spreads in real-world conditions. By testing glass under different stresses — such as vibration from driving, temperature changes and the natural ageing of materials — the research shows how these factors combine to create pressure around a chip, eventually causing it to turn into a crack. This insight is important. It helps us improve how and when we repair, so we can stop damage earlier, keep drivers safer and reduce the need for replacements. So, when we say ‘every chip will eventually crack’, we know it’s the science that shows us this every day.
