🇨🇭 How do we want to live in Switzerland’s historic town centers in the future? (Part 3) The vast majority of the global population lives in cities. These are responsible for over 75% of CO2 emissions. Consequently, cities are problem areas—yet they could also be part of the solution. To achieve this, we need to rethink them. We wrote about this 14 years ago in our book: 📗 *Green Franchising*, Veronika Bellone & Thomas Matla, mi-Wirtschaftsbuch (2012). 🔎 We ask ourselves: How can Swiss historic town centers be made fit for the future? How can they be designed to be resilient against the impacts of climate change? How can their value for residents and visitors be increased? What roles can culture and (bicycle) mobility play in these historic centers? Are there role models for this in Switzerland? Can these be documented, measured, analyzed, evaluated, ranked, and standardized so they can be replicated? 📗 We call this "Greenfranchise Thinking," by the way. As a contribution to the discussion and a source of inspiration, I would like to highlight the "Green-City-Franchising" chapter from our book *Green Franchising* (which is still available as an e-book). 🏡 🏡 🏡 It focuses on "Eco Cities" as global beacons. We examine cities such as Masdar (UAE), Dongtan (Shanghai, China), Curitiba (Paraná, Brazil), and Copenhagen (Denmark), and outline the relevant measurement criteria. Of course, references to the global Green City Index can only serve as an introduction to the topic and raise awareness. 🇨🇭 New, specific assessment criteria would need to be developed and tested for Swiss historic town centers. However, international blueprints demonstrate that such efforts can pay off for everyone involved—municipalities, residents, visitors, and local tradespeople—benefiting society, the economy, tourism, and the environment alike.
