Van Schoute founded a laboratory for the scientific study of paintings at UCLouvain in the 1960s with very limited means, introduced infrared reflectography and radiography as research tools, and used them to take on one of the most contested questions in the study of Flemish Primitives. Van Schoute richtte in de jaren 1960 een laboratorium voor het wetenschappelijk onderzoek van schilderijen op aan de KU Leuven met zeer beperkte middelen. Hij introduceerde infraroodreflectografie en radiografie als onderzoeksinstrumenten, en gebruikte ze om een van de meest betwiste vragen in de studie van de Vlaamse primitieven aan te pakken. Om deze methode en onderzoeksinzichten internationaal te verspreiden, lanceerde hij in 1975 een reeks colloquia over het onderzoek naar ondertekeningen. In 2024 vond de 23ste editie plaats. Van Schoute a fondé, dans les années 1960, avec des moyens très limités, un laboratoire pour l'étude scientifique des peintures (LABART) à l'UCLouvain. Dans ce laboratoire, il a analysé de nombreuses œuvres au moyen de radiographies et de la réflectographie infrarouge.Il a notamment utilisé ces techniques pour s'attaquer à l'une des questions les plus débattues de l'étude des Primitifs flamands.
