From Early Discoveries to Decoding the Skin Microbiome 🔬 Up to 85% of people experience acne-prone skin at some point in their lives, making it the number one reason to consult a dermatologist. As Acne Awareness Month brings renewed attention to its impact, it’s worth remembering that bacteria on the skin have been observed and studied for centuries. Already in 1894, dermatologist Prof. Dr. Paul Gerson Unna, one of the leading dermatologists of his time and a key figure in our company’s history, described a bacterium in skin blemishes – today known as Cutibacterium acnes. An early scientific milestone that helped shift the understanding of blemished skin away from assumptions and myths toward biological processes on the skin and within its microbiome. Advancing skin science has been part of Beiersdorf’s heritage from the very beginning. Over decades, continuous research has deepened our understanding of complex skin conditions such as acne-prone skin – helping to replace stigma with evidence and progress. Today, our work builds on this legacy: 🔬 Our scientists have been decoding the skin microbiome since the 1990s 🧪 Since 2005, we have been exploring pre- and probiotic approaches 🤝 Together with partners like S-Biomedic, we are developing targeted solutions to support and rebalance the skin microbiome Because understanding skin at a biological level is key to creating effective, science-driven skin care solutions. #Beiersdorf #Microbiome #AcneAwarenessMonth #Innovation #WinWithCare
