I came across a job posting recently. “Senior Accountant” CPA required. Looked standard at first… until I read the responsibilities. Own the entire month-end close Handle multi-entity consolidations Manage cash flow Improve systems and processes Support leadership with financial insight I thought—this is a solid Controller role. Then I saw the salary. Staff-level. And it clicked. This isn’t a one-off. This is happening everywhere. Companies aren’t struggling to find talent. They’re struggling to align expectations with reality. You can’t ask for: A CPA Ownership of the numbers Accountability across multiple entities …and price the role like it’s execution-only. The candidates you actually want? They read that posting and move on in 10 seconds. So the role stays open. Or worse—it gets filled by someone underqualified. And then the real cost shows up later. This isn’t a hiring problem. It’s a market awareness problem.
