Etel Adnan, Parmi les tilleuls, 2021, ceramic, 163,7 x 208,4 cm Etel Adnan is a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and essayist known for her richly layered practice across writing and visual art. The work evokes a landscape that feels immediately familiar—one that could belong anywhere along the Mediterranean, carrying with it layers of scent, memory, and lived experience. It is a place remembered as much as perceived. In dialogue with the Biennale’s theme, Where the Day Starts, the work suggests that beginnings are collective and sensory. Formed in ceramic, a medium shaped by time and transformation, Adnan’s landscape does not point to a single origin, but to a continuum of presence. Here, the day begins in memory, in smell, in the quiet intimacy between the viewer and a landscape that feels, somehow, like home. The artwork is currently on view at Our Lady of the Castle.
