Know Allah in Ease Before You Need Him in Hardship قال رسول الله ﷺ: "تَعَرَّفْ إِلَى اللَّهِ فِي الرَّخَاءِ يَعْرِفْكَ فِي الشِّدَّةِ" The Prophet ﷺ said: "Know Allah in times of ease and He will know you in times of hardship." Transliteration: Ta'arraf ilallahi fir-rakhaa'i ya'rifka fish-shiddah. (Musnad Ahmad) Most of us know what it feels like to suddenly become deeply spiritual when something goes wrong. A diagnosis, a loss, a crisis you didn't see coming and suddenly the prayer mat is out, the du'aas are flowing, the Quran is open and you mean every word. That instinct is a mercy in itself because it shows that even at your lowest, your heart knows where to turn. But this hadith is talking about something else entirely. It's talking about the person who builds their relationship with Allah when everything is fine. When there is no emergency pushing them to pray. When the du'aa has no desperation behind it, just consistency. When the Quran is being read not because something broke but because it's Tuesday and this is just what they do. The word تَعَرَّفْ means to make yourself known, to introduce yourself through your actions and worship and attention. The Prophet ﷺ is saying that if you make yourself known to Allah during your comfortable days, then when the hard days come and they will come, you will not be arriving at His door as a stranger. He will know you. There will be a relationship already in place, built brick by brick during the seasons when nobody was watching and nothing was forcing your hand. That reframes how we think about the ordinary stretches of life. The days where nothing remarkable is happening, where you are healthy, employed, safe, surrounded by people who love you, those days are not neutral. They are an opportunity. Every prayer you pray when you don't feel like you desperately need to, every page of Quran you read when life isn't falling apart, every act of worship you do when no one is looking and nothing is wrong, all of that is being deposited into a relationship that will hold you when you need it most. The ease you are living in right now will not last forever. That is not a threat. It's a reality that every human being eventually faces. And this hadith is the Prophet ﷺ telling you, with love and urgency, to use this window. Know Allah now. Build with Him now. So that when the storm comes, you are not scrambling to find Him. He already knows you. May Allah make us people who turn to Him in ease as much as we turn to Him in hardship and may He never let us become strangers to Him. Ameen.
