Allah could have drowned Pharaoh between two mountains of water in a single second. He chose not to and drowned him slowly. The army was taken from behind, one section at a time. The water circled him, rising gradually and Pharaoh, who had spent his entire life commanding everything around him, found himself in a world that was getting smaller and smaller and there was nothing he could do about it. The empire that had stretched across the ancient world had narrowed down to one man in a shrinking column of water. When the water reached his throat, he said it: I believe. But even now, even drowning, even with his army gone, even in that final moment, he could not say the word Allah. He said: I believe in the one that the Israelites believe in. Their God, not mine. He couldn’t give the word because the ego held on until the very last breath. Allah’s response was not a long speech, it was simple and direct: now you believe? Your whole life, the only thing you ever cared about was your body. Your reputation, your power, your gold, your royal blood, all of it was about what you could hold in this world. So, we will save your body and make it a sign for everyone who comes after you. Pharaoh had been obsessed with mummification, with preserving the physical form for the afterlife and in the end, that is all he received. A preserved body. A sign. No soul transferred into a sacred tomb. No stars awaiting him, just a form in a display case, reminding every person who walks by of what this life looked like when it became someone’s only concern.
