Recovery is more than rest. It is a biological process that starts at the cellular level. At the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) Conference, Dr. Brian K. McFarlin, PhD, FACSM (University of North Texas) and Rodney Benjamin Rod Benjamin, Director of RAQA, R&D, and Technical Sales Support at Balchem, shared new insights on the role of OptiMSM® in exercise recovery. Dr. McFarlin highlighted emerging research on MSM’s role beyond traditional recovery support, including its potential involvement in methyl donation and DNA methylation. He also presented findings from a half-marathon study showing OptiMSM® may help support the body’s resolution of normal exercise-induced inflammatory responses, contributing to improved recovery and post-exercise comfort. Rod Benjamin expanded on this science with his presentation exploring sulfur flux and methylation balance, demonstrating how MSM differs from classical antioxidants during inflammatory stress, with implications for both recovery and metabolic resilience. His abstract will also be published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. We are proud to share this science with the sports nutrition community at ISSN.
