New research is redefining how we think about iron and brain health. Iron plays an essential role in neurotransmitter synthesis, myelination, and energy metabolism, making it foundational for mood, focus, and cognitive performance. Yet low iron status can disrupt these pathways long before anemia appears. A new 2025 meta-analysis by Fiani and colleagues helps clarify this connection by reviewing 16 clinical trials in non-anemic youth and menstruating adults with confirmed iron deficiency. The analysis found meaningful improvements in fatigue, physical well-being, short-term memory, and problem-solving following iron supplementation. This research reinforces the importance of supporting iron status proactively in at risk populations. Ferrochel® ferrous bisglycinate chelate offers a well-tolerated, highly bioavailable form of iron that supports these goals and may help improve formulation compliance.
