Two conversations. Two mindsets. Two different futures. I have heard both in my 17 years in automotive. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁: 🚗 "Software is a feature we DELIVER with the car." Hardware is king. Precision engineering is everything. Software? Just make it work with the ECU. Don't touch what isn't broken. This mindset built the most reliable cars on the planet. Decades of engineering excellence. Legacy that cannot be ignored. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗦𝗗𝗩 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁: 💡 "The car is a hardware platform we EVOLVE software on." Software is the product. Hardware is just the delivery mechanism. OTA updates. AI features. Cloud connectivity. The car gets BETTER after you buy it. This mindset is rewriting the entire automotive industry. Tesla proved it. Every OEM is now chasing it. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵: Neither mindset alone wins. The engineers who will lead the next decade? They respect the classic heritage — Functional safety. Precision. Reliability. ISO 26262. AND they embrace the SDV future — Adaptive AUTOSAR. OTA. Centralised compute. AI. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀. The automotive industry does not need engineers who only know the past. It does not need engineers who only dream of the future. It needs engineers who can carry the best of both worlds. After 17 years — that is the one skill I am most proud of building.
