Sampling down to 1000 m depth, is incredibly time consuming and logistically challenging, and therefore rarely done- but there are super cool creatures down there! A multi-disciplinary group of researchers from Australia, New Zealand and Canada (including our very own Lian Kwong!) stepped up to the challenge and embarked on a 21 day voyage in the East Australia Current lead by Dr. Iain Suthers (prof. UNSW). Sampling tackled the entire marine food web productivity from bacteria to whales. Lian Kwong (Ph.D. Candidate at UBC and Bailey environmental scientist) focused on evaluating active carbon transport in contrasting mesoscale eddies. This deep sampling led researchers to encounter numerous deep sea fishes, contributing a number of samples to the Australian Museum, including this adorable Sunfish larvae - Mola alexandrini featured on IFL science. Who can name the other species featured here? #baileyenvironmental #marinescience #environmentalmonitoring #workonwater #womeninscience
