(First stone laid) Saint-Joseph, Charleroi Today marks a key milestone in the transformation of the former Saint-Joseph hospital site in Charleroi: the laying of the first stone for the project’s initial phase. Following the relocation of the Grand Hôpital de Charleroi to its new Les Viviers campus, a number of former hospital sites across the city are being progressively released for redevelopment. Within this broader transition, Saint-Joseph and Reine Fabiola were identified as the first sites to be rethought as new urban neighbourhoods. The urban masterplanning approach for both sites was developed by B-city, in collaboration with Reservoir A and Goffart Polomé, setting out a phased framework for their long-term transformation into mixed, liveable districts integrated into the existing urban fabric. Within this framework, the architectural design for Saint-Joseph is developed by B-architecten, Reservoir A and Goffart Polomé, translating the masterplan principles into a first concrete phase of housing, shared spaces and public realm. This first stone marks the transition from design to realisation — the first built step in a wider urban transformation process that will unfold over time.
