Behind the Scenes at Munich Airport : The Precision Behind Lufthansa ’s Hub Operations ✈️ ⭕️Last week, I had the opportunity to go behind the scenes at Munich Airport and experience firsthand how one of Europe’s most efficient aviation hubs operates in real time fot visiting both the Hub Operations Center (HOC) and the highly advanced baggage handling system of Terminal 2, the home of Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners. The HOC is truly the operational heart of Munich Airport’s hub structure, bringing together Lufthansa, airport operations, ground handling, security authorities, and other stakeholders into one integrated coordination environment. From real-time flight monitoring and gate management to passenger flows, baggage handling, and turnaround optimization, every operational detail is continuously monitored and coordinated to maintain efficiency and punctuality. What impressed me most was seeing firsthand how Munich Airport manages extremely short connection times so successfully especially within Terminal 2, where Lufthansa’s hub operations are designed around fast and seamless transfers. After visiting both the HOC and the baggage system, I now better understand how such short transfer times can actually work operationally. The level of synchronization, automation, and real-time decision-making behind the scenes is extraordinary. One of the most fascinating details I discovered inside the baggage system was something the operational teams call “Marriage & Divorce.” Every suitcase is “married” to a white coded tray, known as a tub, that carries it throughout the entire conveyor network. This pairing allows the system to track every individual bag in real time across approximately 54 kilometers of conveyor infrastructure moving at speeds of up to 25 km/h. Only shortly before loading onto the aircraft does the “divorce” happen when the bag separates from its white tray and is transferred onto the loading vehicles heading to the aircraft. Watching this process made me realize that Munich Airport witnesses thousands of “marriages and divorces” every single day — all happening with remarkable precision, speed, and synchronization behind the scenes. The scale of the operation is truly impressive: • Up to 1,500 bags per hour screened in the first scan stage • Capacity for 1,200 transfer bags per hour • Storage capability for up to 6,000 bags • 114 check-in counters across 8 check-in areas • 100% baggage screening before aircraft loading Experiencing firsthand how Munich Airport combines operational excellence, advanced technology, and seamless passenger connectivity was truly impressive. It once again demonstrated why Munich continues to be recognized as one of Europe’s leading premium hub airports. My sincere thanks to Florian Poetsch , Corinna Born and Mesut Ünal who hosted and guided me during this insightful visit👏🏻🥰 It was a great experience for me.
