PHC Myth #4: Paper honeycomb can only handle compression loads. This one has a kernel of truth in it, which makes it one of the more persistent myths. Yes, compression is where bare honeycomb core excels. And without skins, the statement is correct. But a honeycomb panel is never just core. Add skins, and you have a sandwich panel. And sandwich panels are different structures with a much broader load profile: ◆ Shear loads: sandwich panels distribute these loads effectively. It's one of the defining characteristics of the construction. ◆ Bending and deflection: the primary load demand for load floors, for example, has little to do with compression. PHC panels are widely used for exactly this application. ◆ Side loads: with skins, a panel on its side will eventually fail by skin buckling. But here's where honeycomb does something important: it supports the skin continuously along its height. The smaller the cell size, the shorter the unsupported buckling length, and the higher the load the panel can take. The honeycomb doesn't just carry load. It stabilizes the structure that does.
