Another AVL-built concept vehicle is proving its strength on the road. This time in one of the most demanding transport environments in Europe. Scania selected AVL to support the rapid development of an Extended Range Electrical Vehicle (EREV) based on a production BEV truck to support one of SCANIA’s Pilot Partners. The task: integrate a range‑extender system into the BEV platform and deliver a fully functional prototype for real operation in northern Sweden - in record time. Why this matters: Forestry transport in remote regions comes with steep gradients, heavy loads, harsh road conditions, and very limited charging infrastructure. Pure BEV operation quickly reaches its limits, especially when payload and uptime define the business case. A range extender can close this gap and enable a practical, robust step toward significant CO₂ reduction. AVL’s contribution: bringing concept to road‑ready vehicle: 🔧 Full systems engineering and integration, including packaging the range extender into the BEV chassis 🛠️ Fabrication, assembly, supplier coordination, and complete vehicle build at AVL ⚙️ Commissioning for real customer drive cycles aligned with Scania’s operational requirements And the results underline the value of the concept: Tony Sandberg, Vice President Scania Pilot Partner, states: "We are really happy with the collaboration with AVL. They are highly competent and committed to solve our problems. The result was a fantastic concept that worked really well in customer operation.“ This collaboration shows that range‑extended electric trucks can play a crucial role in enabling zero‑emission transport in demanding line-haul and hub-hub transportation, long before full charging infrastructure is available! Currently the SCANIA EREV is a concept vehicle operated by selected SCANIA Pilot Partner customers and not available for sale.
