HutanBio and Utopia World Investment are advancing desert grown microalgae in Oman as a scalable feedstock for future SAF production. HutanBio’s technology centres on Sphaerica, a newly identified genus of microalgae discovered by Dr John Archer of Cambridge University, whose career spans MIT, Cambridge and a founding role in the biology department at KAUST. The company claims the strain delivers oil yields substantially higher than conventional algae varieties, directly addressing the productivity gap that made previous algae-based fuel programmes, including high-profile ventures backed by ExxonMobil and @Craig Venter in the 2010s, commercially unworkable.
